DNP Develops New Vacuum Metalized High Barrier PP Film

Twice higher barrier property than DNP¡¯s conventional Mono-material packaging

Tokyo, July 8, 2025, Dai Nippon Printing Co., Ltd. (DNP) has developed Vacuum Metalized High Barrier PP Film1, suitable for mono-material packaging’s base material. The new film has high barrier property against oxygen and water vapor, as well as a high lightproof property.

Mono-material packaging using this product exhibits almost double the barrier performance compared to the DNP’s conventional mono-material packaging2

By utilizing this Vacuum Metalized High Barrier PP Film for Mono-material structure,  it supports switching to the sustainable packaging that reduces the environmental impact without compromising the shelf-life of the contents such as medicines, cosmetics, and food.

Background

The European Union (EU) enacted the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) in February 2025, which aims to reduce packaging waste. PPWR stipulates that from 2030 onwards, packaging that does not meet requirements, such as a recyclability rating of 70% or more, may not be supplied to the market. As a result, the introduction of easy to recycle mono-material packaging is accelerating.

DNP has developed the Vacuum Metalized High Barrier PP Film in response to this social trend. DNP’s mono-material packaging that uses Vacuum Metalized High Barrier PP Film complies with the guidelines of the Circular Economy for Flexible Packaging (CEFLEX) consortium, which aims to realize the recycling-orientated economy in Europe in the field of flexible packaging. It is expected to comply with PPWR standards to be established in the future.

Features

1. High barrier property replaces aluminum foil

By utilizing this newly developed product, the barrier properties against oxygen and water vapor have been improved by approximately twice higher than our conventional mono-material packaging. Also, given the high light-proof property thanks to the aluminum vapor deposition technology, it will be possible to switch from conventional aluminum foil to PP mono-material packaging for pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and food. In addition, the use of mono-material materials makes recycling easier, which contributes to the realization of a recycling-oriented society.

2. Reducing CO2 emissions and procurement risks

Compared to aluminum foil, the newly developed product can reduce CO2 emissions during the manufacturing process. Based our in-house calculations, approximately 19% less CO2 emissions could be reduced throughout the product life cycle, from raw material procurement to manufacturing, transportation and disposal. At present, aluminum foil is experiencing high demand and high costs, hence by switching out this material it is possible to reduce procurement risks for pharmaceutical, cosmetics, and food manufacturers and secure a stable supply of packaging materials.

3. Mono-materials reduce environmental impact and promote  recycling

DNP mono-material packaging materials that use the newly developed product comply with the CEFLEX guidelines. These guidelines promote the improvement of resource recycling efficiency by setting a target of 90% or more for the ratio of single materials (polyethylene (PE) and PP) as one of the indicators of recyclability for flexible packaging.. By enabling the design of mono-material packaging that comply with these guidelines, we will reduce the environmental impact and promote the recycling of materials.

Looking Ahead

DNP will provide this newly developed product to pharmaceutical, cosmetics and food manufacturers, along with companies exporting products to Europe. By using this product as the outer pillow pouch of mono-material PP Press-Through-Packaging (PTP)3   it is possible to make the entire packaging into a mono-material structure. Going forward, DNP will continue to improve barrier performance and add functionality, while also promoting the development and provision of mono-material packaging materials that comply with global regulations.

DNP will introduce this product at booth W34 at the MEDICAL FAIR THAILAND, Thailand’s leading medical and healthcare exhibition, to be held at BITEC Bangkok from September 10 to September 12, 2025.
